Sports Minister Daryll Matthew with U-19 Cricket Team, including Bowers
Sports and Education Minister Daryll Matthew says the late Vonde Bowers was a promising cricketer with a bright future. Bowers was stabbed to death in Grays Farm during an altercation last night. Matthew issued this statement to Antigua.news moments ago:
“It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I acknowledge the tragic and untimely passing of young Vonde Bowers. A talented cricketer and a proud member of our Under-19 national team, Vonde had just returned from representing Antigua and Barbuda in the United Kingdom—carrying with him not only the hopes of a nation, but the promise of a bright and impactful future in sport and in life.
His loss is personal and it is national. It is a devastating reminder of the painful cost of violence in our society.
We must use this moment to reflect and recommit ourselves to building a culture of peace, especially among our youth. I urge all young people: choose life, choose purpose, choose peace. Walk away from violence. The future is far too precious to be lost this way.
May Vonde’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory inspire us to do better, for his generation and the next.”

Investigations are still ongoing into the situation.
