A new training initiative aimed at expanding Antigua and Barbuda’s Blue Economy will be launched this September through a partnership between the Department of the Blue Economy and the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center (FFRC) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences.
The Training Course on Ocean-Based Aquaculture Development and Management will run from September 1 to 21, 2025, at the Villa Polyclinic Conference Room, offering participants practical skills in modern aquaculture practices and technologies.
Targeted at professionals, entrepreneurs, and students involved in fisheries, agriculture, marine conservation, youth development, and sustainability, the programme is expected to draw wide local interest. Organisers say the training is a critical step in building capacity for a resilient, self-sufficient ocean economy.
Delivered by leading fisheries and aquaculture scientists from China, including professors from the East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute and the FFRC, the course will combine lectures, hands-on sessions, and field visits. Topics will include marine fish breeding, crab hatchery techniques, aquafeed production, and seaweed farming, all areas with strong potential for commercial and environmental impact in the Caribbean.
