Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that Cabinet is currently deliberating the renaming of Potters Main Road in honor of the legendary Antiguan band Burning Flames.

The Prime Minister shared the news on social media, revealing that the proposed new name for the thoroughfare would be “Burning Flames Drive.”

The announcement comes as Burning Flames celebrates their 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades of musical excellence and cultural contribution to Antigua and Barbuda.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s social media post, band member Clarence “Oungku” Edwards expressed enthusiasm for the potential honour. Edwards noted that a name change had been promised to the band over 30 years ago and praised the Prime Minister’s efforts to make it a reality saying “if your cabinet can get this done this would be another feather in your already well decorated hat.”

Burning Flames stands as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most influential musical exports, renowned for their high-energy performances that have captivated audiences worldwide. The band was formed in 1984 and features three brothers – Clarence “Oungku” Edwards, Toriano “Onyan” Edwards, and David “Bubb-I” Edwards – along with their nephew Rone “Foxx” Watkins.

Over their four-decade career, Burning Flames has toured extensively, performing before diverse international audiences and serving as cultural ambassadors for Antigua and Barbuda. Their music has played a significant role in promoting Caribbean culture globally.

  3. While I have immense respect for Burning Flames and their contribution to our culture, I hope the government is also considering the practical implications of renaming a major road. There are costs and logistical issues for businesses and residents. The gesture is great, but let’s ensure it’s handled properly.
