Tropical Storm Erin is intensifying as it heads west-northwest across the Atlantic and is expected to become a hurricane later Friday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

As of 8 a.m. AST, Erin was located about 520 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph with higher gusts. The storm is moving at 17 mph, and its center is forecast to pass near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend.

A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Sint Maarten. This watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours. Residents of the northern Leeward Islands, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico are advised to stay alert and monitor updates from local authorities.
