2025 Hurricane Season Remains Above Normal, says Climatologist Dale Destin

268Weather, owned by Climatologist Dale Destin, is maintaining its forecast that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will likely be above normal, with the potential to become one of the most active on record.

2025 Hurricane Season Remains Above Normal, says Climatologist Dale Destin

The Hurricane Season runs from June to November, and despite a relatively quiet season so far, current projections suggest the season could rank in the top ten percent since 1991 based on Accumulated Cyclone Energy.

He said, the outlook takes into account five named storms that have already formed—Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, and Erin. Of these, Hurricane Erin became the season’s most powerful system so far, reaching Category 5 strength with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour on August 16.

The storm lashed portions of the northern Leeward Islands and the Virgin Islands with storm-force gusts and left behind more than nine inches of rainfall in some areas.

Forecasters note that the chances remain high for an above-average season, with the possibility of a “super-hyperactive” outcome that would place 2025 among the most active seasons ever recorded. The projected number of storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes all sit above the long-term averages for the period 1991 to 2020.

Most of the activity is still expected to unfold during the peak months of August through October. This will be the final forecast update for 2025, with the next outlook to be issued in April 2026 ahead of the new season.

While the forecast highlights the likelihood of heightened activity, meteorologists caution that uncertainties remain, particularly around El Niño patterns and sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, prepared, and attentive to advisories throughout the remainder of the season.

  1. Nine inches of rain from one storm? That’s scary.

  2. Above-normal and possibly super-hyperactive? This isn’t just numbers on a chart; this affects lives and property.

  3. Dale is an idiot. Why does he have an independent weather page outside of the national weather page. Isnt that conflict of interest?

    • A conflict of interest happens when a person’s personal interests (such as financial gain, relationships, or other private benefits) could interfere with, or appear to interfere with, their professional duties or decisions.

In other words, it’s when someone’s judgment, objectivity, or actions at work (or in a role of trust) might be influenced — or seem influenced — by something that benefits them personally.

    • Thank you for raising this concern. Just to clarify, what I maintain is not a separate “weather service” but a personal blog across social media platforms (WordPress, Facebook, X, Instagram, etc.). Its purpose is to share information, raise awareness, and engage the public on weather and climate issues in a more informal way than the official service allows.

I also want to note that I receive no financial benefit from this activity — it is done purely on a voluntary basis. This is not dissimilar to the activities of countless professionals, in meteorology and other fields globally, who use social media to share knowledge, promote awareness, and build public understanding.

I take conflict-of-interest concerns seriously and make clear distinctions between my official responsibilities and my personal outreach. The blog does not replace or compete with the national service’s authoritative forecasts and warnings — those remain the official source. Instead, the blog complements that work by helping more people understand and access weather and climate information.
