Are Antigua and Barbuda’s Elderly the New Targets of Violent Crime?

A troubling pattern is emerging across Antigua and Barbuda: elderly citizens appear to be the latest targets of violent crime.

In recent days, police have responded to a string of incidents in which senior residents were robbed, assaulted, and left shaken in their own homes.

From Browne’s Avenue to Kentish Road, reports have surfaced of intruders breaking into houses, demanding money, and in some cases, physically attacking their victims.

In one incident, an 80-year-old woman was struck on the head after answering a noise at her door shortly after midnight.

In another, a 90-year-old and her caretaker were confronted by two masked men, assaulted, and forced to the ground while their home was ransacked. Both women were hospitalized but are expected to recover.

Police investigations are ongoing, but the targeting of elderly residents—often seen as among the most vulnerable in society—has sparked wider concern. Relatives, neighbors, and community leaders are calling for greater protection, while some are urging seniors not to open their doors late at night and to remain vigilant.

The question now hangs over the nation: are these isolated incidents, or the beginning of a worrying trend that leaves the elderly at greater risk in their twilight years?

  1. They deserve respect and safety, and the authorities must prioritize their protection. However, I just can’t stomach the fact that someone will target these people.

  2. SMH. This is deeply concerning. Our elderly citizens deserve to feel safe in their own homes, yet these recent incidents show how vulnerable they can be. I believe they are being targetted for no reason. It’s crucial that authorities step up patrols and community support, while families and neighbors remain vigilant. Protecting our seniors should be a top priority no one should live in fear in their golden years.

  4. It certainly appears that way because of their vulnerability.
But it’s cruel of the people who take advantage of these individuals

  5. Given what been happening lately, I have no choice but believing the same thing. I mean, is it because they may be weak and defenseless?

  7. My heart breaks hearing about this. The elderly should be able to live their lives in peace and safety, yet they are being targeted and hurt in their own homes. It’s so sad and unfair our seniors deserve love, respect, and protection.
