MP Anthony Smith
Independent MP Anthony Smith is calling for both sides of the Lower House to join in the efforts to tackle and resolve the Social Security matter.
Smith was speaking in Parliament on Monday afternoon where he condemned members of the United Progressive Party (UPP) for the misinformation that they have been peddling in the media.
“What the Scheme needs is more than wishful thinking that I am hearing from members of Opposition. What the Scheme needs is prudent investment to bring returns for its long-term viability,” Smith said.
He said based on the report given by the Director of Social Security; there should be no delays or push back in trying to address this issue.
Smith further condemned the Opposition for their lack of effort in addressing this matter when similar reports were shared back in 2010.
“When I listen to the member on the other side, I can truly say they don’t want better for the country. All they want to do is hold on to the old guard, exploit the young people, put us out in the public and hold on to the old guards like the Giselle’s and the Chaku’s to come and to make all the decisions for you. They don’t want no good for this country.”
He said it was quite hypocritic of the UPP to condemn the ABLP for borrowing from the Scheme but turned around and did the same when they got in office.
“They contributed to the dire situation of the Scheme as well,” Smith added.
He reiterated his call for a unified and comprehensive approach to resolve the issue.
“The most important thing is for us to make the Social Security Scheme sustainable and viable. It’s going to need an administration that is honest, has discipline and has vision…We are at a critical junction and for those people who say Jolly Beach is a failure, your vision is a failure. We need to stop playing games and we need to be honest with the people.
“Let us fix this problem once and for all in the interest of every Antiguan and Barbudan. The future of our social security is not a partisan issue, it is a national one that will affect our most vulnerable; our elderly, sick and our children. So, lets rise above the political noise and let’s do what is right. Let us fix this problem and let us build a sustainable system for all of Antigua and Barbuda,” Smith concluded.

Finally, someone saying this is bigger than politics. Social Security affects everyone, and both sides need to work together to fix it.
Smith is right about needing honesty and discipline. The public deserves clear information about how the Scheme is being managed.
Lol. Anthony we know u on the government side on this and every other venture. But this venture does infact require a unified approach in order for its success
Words are good, but will the government really set aside differences and act decisively? Time will tell.
When you go back and unite with the UPP you will tell us about unity
