Superstar singer Taylor Swift took to Instagram to announce her engagement to American football player Travis Kelce, sharing with it a series of pictures.
She accompanied her post with the caption reading: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” signed off with a fire cracker emoji.
The couple who have been together for two years, sent the social media platform into something of a frenzy with the post being liked a remarkable 29 million times, half of which arrived within the first hour of the announcement.
Later it emerged that photos of the Kansas City Chiefs player proposing to the pop queen had surpassed one million reposts, which is considerably more than any other post has ever received before.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were among those millions of fans who liked the post and even US President Donald Trump got in on the act, despite publicly slating the singer only last year when he wrote on social media: “I hate Taylor Swift!” after the singer endorsed his presidential rival Kamala Harris. This time around he was more complimentary, writing: “I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player, and he’s a great guy, and I think she’s a terrific person.”
Kelce’s father, Ed revealed in an interview that his son had actually proposed nearly two weeks ago. He explained how it had been a “beautiful” moment and had taken place at a garden in the city of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. “He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘let’s go out and have a glass of wine’… they got out there, and that’s when he asked her.”
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay published a photo of himself congratulating Kelce after the Kansas City Chiefs won the NFL championship in 2023 and added a caption reading: “From one ring to the next… congrats @killatrav & @taylorswift! From your favourite Home Ec Teacher Gx”.
It is being reported that the ring itself was purchased from Artifex Fine Jewelery and industry experts have estimated it could cost anywhere from $675,000 up to approaching $5.5m. Jewellery magazine managing editor, Ruth Faulkner, said the diamond looked to be an 8-10 carat vintage stone, which she wrote was “quite rare” and the singer’s publicist, Tree Paine, did confirm that the engagement ring was an old mine brilliant-cut diamond from Kindred Lubeck.
It should finally put an end to the relentless speculation from certain quarters (with no evidence to support it) that the relationship was not genuine, but simply a cynical ploy for more fame for the pair, with some even suggesting that it had just been a carefully arranged ploy to influence the US elections.
The couple will no doubt receive plenty of help in making wedding arrangements as they themselves have busy schedules ahead, with the Chiefs’ football season beginning on 5 September and Taylor Swift about to release her new album,The Life of a Showgirl, on 3 October.
The global singing sensation might be receiving one or two cautionary notes following her news, as marriage has been known to seriously damage creativity in the pop world for numerous other artists in the past.
