Flash Flood Watch Issued as Rains Continue

Weather officials have issued a flash flood watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Antigua and Barbuda, warning that flooding could occur before 1pm today.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued the alert at 8:14am.

The country has been experiencing intense thunderstorm activity with frequent lightning strikes since early this morning.

A tropical wave passing over the Leeward and British Virgin Islands has been causing periodic heavy showers and thunderstorms across the area. Weather officials report that some areas of Antigua have already received an estimated one inch of rain in the past three hours, while Barbuda has seen up to three inches during the same period.

Meteorologists warn that another two inches of rain could fall over the next six hours, creating conditions that could lead to significant flooding in vulnerable areas.

The flash flood watch means that while flooding is possible, it is not happening immediately. However, weather officials stress that flash flooding is extremely dangerous and can develop rapidly.

Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas are being urged to prepare for potential flooding to protect their lives and property. Officials advise people to be ready to move to higher ground if heavy rains continue or if a more serious flash flood warning is issued.

  3. People need to take this seriously. Flash floods don’t give you time to react, better to prepare now than regret later.
