Prime Minister Gaston Browne has paid tribute to world-renowned Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away this week. Armani, who built a luxury home in Antigua several decades ago, was a frequent visitor to the island where he sought rest and inspiration.
Browne described Armani as a “very artistic and creative” individual whose work transformed global fashion and made his brand one of the most sought-after in the world. The Prime Minister noted that Antigua and Barbuda’s peaceful environment played a role in fueling Armani’s creativity.
“Antigua and Barbuda is among the most inspiring places on the planet because of the tranquil and beautiful settings which give rise to imagination and artistry,” Browne said.
Over the years, Armani joined other Italian celebrities in choosing Antigua’s southwest coast as a retreat, an investment trend that encouraged locals to build luxury rental properties for visiting elites. The Prime Minister also pointed to ongoing efforts at Jumby Bay and PLH in Barbuda to attract wealthy international clients seeking the same tranquility and exclusivity.
Browne expressed heartfelt condolences to Armani’s family and to the people of Italy, calling him “an iconic global figure” whose influence in fashion will continue to be celebrated worldwide.
“May he rest in peace,” the Prime Minister said.
