Agricultural Science educators gathered at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus on Wednesday, September 3, for their annual workshop hosted by the Ministry of Education.
This year’s session focused on the theme of equipping students with the skills and attitudes needed to strengthen food security in Antigua and Barbuda, while encouraging a passion for sustainable agricultural practices.

Agricultural Science Officer, Mrs. Nicolette Francis, outlined the department’s goals for the 2025–2026 academic year. These include partnerships with key ministries such as Agriculture, Health, and Social Transformation; training in modern farming techniques; the rehabilitation of school aquaponics and hydroponics systems; upgrades to poultry pen facilities; and enhanced technical and teaching support for educators.
A total of 35 participants attended the workshop, including teachers from the preschool, primary, and secondary levels, as well as farm attendant supervisors. Mrs. Francis also reviewed last year’s highlights, such as the Inter-School Garden Competition and Agro-Fest, and used the opportunity to discuss CXC results, share teaching strategies, and engage educators through interactive scenario-based exercises.
Guest speaker Dr. Georgette Meade, a cardiologist and internal medicine specialist, delivered a presentation titled “Love Your Mind, Heart and Body.” Her session explored healthy eating, chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension, and the importance of personal responsibility in managing wellness.

The day ended with remarks from Professor C. Justin Robinson, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of UWI Five Islands. He reinforced the importance of healthy consumption, announced the university’s intention to expand agricultural science programmes, and stressed the need for ongoing collaboration with community partners, including law enforcement.
Teachers left the workshop energized, showing strong engagement throughout the day and expressing appreciation for the sessions and support provided.

Good for them. Hope they pass on the knowledge
It’s great to see UWI Five Islands investing in agricultural science. Expanding these programmes will give students more opportunities to contribute to our food security.
This is exactly the kind of initiative we need! Teaching our students about sustainable farming and food security is crucial for Antigua and Barbuda’s future.
Love this initiative! Agriculture is the backbone of survival, glad to see it being taught properly.
