George “Charlie” Barnes

Police are continuing investigations into the fatal shooting of well-known businessman George “Charlie” Barnes, 74, who was killed outside his home in Ottos Newtown late Friday night.

Reports indicate that Barnes had just arrived at his Nugent Street residence around 10:20 p.m. when he was confronted by an unidentified assailant. He was shot in the chest during the attack and pronounced dead at the scene.

Barnes, the owner and operator of Charlie’s Service Station on Sir Sydney Walling Highway, was a respected member of the business community. His death has sparked shock and sadness among family, friends, and residents who knew him well.

Police have appealed to the public for assistance in solving the case. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913 or call the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline at 800-Tips (8477).

In a statement, Acting Commissioner of Police Everton Jeffers expressed condolences to the bereaved family, calling the shooting a tragic loss.

Investigators have not yet released a motive or identified a suspect, but say their probe is ongoing.

  4. Tragic, senseless, unacceptable YET NOTHING WILL BE DONE!!
The people wont take to the streets and demand answers from the prime minister and attorney general. You will hear the usual noises, but this senseless murder will just join the long list of unsolved murders in Antigua.
