The Department of Culture is continuing to keep the country’s heritage alive with the launch of the Creatives Amongst Us project.
This initiative will celebrate those creatives “who are often overlooked, the unsung heroes”. Seven (7) outstanding individuals across the cultural sectors of Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Film, Literary Arts, Carnival Arts, and Craftwill be honored.
“The Creatives Among Us project was created to celebrate the persons who are often overlooked, these unsung heroes. So, the aim of it is to honor them and let them tell their stories. We’re going to leave it up to the general public, right? So,you know, you have persons who shine in the spotlight, but we want to honor the ones who are kind of in the background, but they’ve impacted our society greatly,” Zaire Charles Project Coordinator explained.
A short bio, nothing over 2000 words can be submitted. A profile picture of the person should also be attached.
You can submit through email at [email protected] or drop off at the office on Old Parham Road.
“Last year was great. We had persons like Mr. Kenny Wilson. That’s the man who would as soon as you come off the plane, you see him. He’s all dressed up in his nice outfit singing for you. I just wanted to touch on him because he just contributed significantly and there’s a lot that we don’t know about him. He also played for James Brown. The famous James Brown. A lot of people don’t even know that.
“We had Keith Roy Benjamin, the Chacha Dumpling Man, as well,” Charles added.
If chosen this time around, the honorees will get to be premiered in a documentary in late October where we will hear about their journey.
Deadline for submission is October 1.
