Authorities have issued a High Surf Warning for Antigua and Barbuda, with large and dangerous swells expected to continue over the coming days. Forecasts indicate that peak waves could exceed 12 feet (over 3 metres), creating hazardous marine and coastal conditions across the island.
The Meteorological Office has cautioned that the warning will remain in effect until at least Monday into Tuesday, as strong swells move through the region. The most significant impacts are expected along northern, eastern, and southern coastlines, where rough seas and powerful breakers pose risks to swimmers, small craft operators, and property along the shoreline.
Officials have urged residents and visitors to take the warnings seriously. “We are experiencing extremely high seas. Conditions are dangerous and we strongly advise against swimming, fishing, or venturing near the shoreline until the seas subside,” the advisory stated.
The public is also reminded that coastal flooding, beach erosion, and sea spray on roadways are possible during this period. Property owners in low-lying coastal areas are being encouraged to secure belongings and take measures to protect their homes and businesses.
Emergency services have appealed for cooperation, stressing that safety must remain the top priority. “The risk to life and property is high. We are calling on everyone to act responsibly and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sea,” authorities emphasized.
The Meteorological Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions evolve.
