High Surf Advisory Issued for Antigua and Neighboring Islands

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a high surf advisory for Antigua and several neighboring islands as dangerous wave conditions threaten coastal areas.

The advisory, issued Tuesday morning at 5:00 AM on October 7, 2025, warns that moderate long-period northern swells are producing dangerous surf ranging from 6 to 10 feet and creating hazardous rip currents, particularly along northern and western-facing beaches.

Antigua is under the advisory until midday, while Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis will remain under the warning until the afternoon.

According to forecaster Letitia Humphreys, the conditions may result in strong, life-threatening rip currents and potential injuries to beachgoers.

Additional impacts include beach erosion, localized flooding, dangerous conditions for marine users, and possible saltwater intrusion affecting potable water supply.

Wave conditions include northern swells of 5 feet, occasionally reaching up to 9 feet, with breaking waves of 6 feet or higher. The swell period is between 10 and 11 seconds, with possible coastal flooding during high tide.

The Meteorological Service is advising the public to avoid exposed or rocky coastlines and to swim only where lifeguards are present. Residents and visitors are encouraged to prefer sheltered southern beaches during the advisory period.

Those caught in rip currents are advised not to fight against them. Instead, they should float, signal for help, and if able, swim parallel to the shore to escape the current.
