Cabinet reiterates policy for government vehicle purchase

Car dealerships are being reminded of the Cabinet’s policy regarding the purchasing of vehicles for government use.

All requests for the purchase of motor vehicles by and for the use of the government are required to be furnished with a Decision of Cabinet, expressly authorizing such purchase.

Further, it must be noted that according to the 2023 policy, should any vehicle be delivered or consigned to the government without the appropriate legal authority and Decision of Cabinet, the purchase shall be deemed null and void, and consequently the government shall accept no liability for any costs or charges arising therefrom.

It is also advised that, notwithstanding any accompanying Decision of Cabinet authorizing the purchase, all requests for the purchase of motor vehicles must be duly processed by the purchasing authority and the corresponding payment vouchers must have been prepared and approved prior to the delivery of any motor vehicle.

Several infractions pushed the Cabinet to reiterate its policy.

The cabinet discovered a few infractions, and it felt that it was necessary to reiterate its policy to ensure that it does not continue and or even spread to all the divisions of government and from time-to-time cabinet would see the need to remind public servants of government’s policies and this is one of them.”

“You know cabinet makes policy decisions practically every week and so there were some infractions. They were discovered and the cabinet believes that it was nipped in the bud and so therefore we are reminding dealers and public servants of the rules and what is required. A letter was even crafted by the cabinet secretary to resend this same 2023 decision, our policy decision back to the dealers”, Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant said.

While Merchant did not identify which suppliers were conducting these infractions, he did add that all suppliers and vendors have been put on notice which should ensure no other issues arise in the future.
