Two young government senators are switching portfolios as part of what the government says is its development and rotation policy.

According to a press statement released by Director of Communications in the office of the prime minister Maurice Merchant, starting today Monday, October 13, Senator Shenella Govia will take up her new post as Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Works, after serving in the Ministry of Education, Sport and Creative Industries.

The statement released overnight also states that Senator Clement Antonio, who previously worked in Housing and Works, will move to the Ministry of Education, Sport and Creative Industries, where he’ll have special responsibility for the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the move is part of the government’s ongoing plan to give young leaders wider experience and exposure across key ministries.

“Both senators have shown strong leadership and potential, and this rotation is meant to build on that,” the Prime Minister said.

The changes were made under Section 69(4) of the Constitution, which gives the Prime Minister authority to assign ministerial responsibilities. The formal appointments were issued by the Governor-General.

  12. Honestly, a shake-up like this could be good. Different portfolios mean different challenges, and both senators might grow from the experience. As long as the people benefit, that’s what really matters.
