Residents Urged to Take Shelter as Lightning and Thunder Sweep Across Antigua

As thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall continue to affect Antigua and Barbuda, officials are urging residents—especially students and parents—to take extra precautions and follow lightning safety guidelines.

Meteorological officials are reminding the public that during periods of thunder and lightning, it is essential to remain indoors or avoid open areas. Residents are advised to seek shelter immediately if they see lightning or hear thunder.

“When thunder roars, go indoors,” the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services cautioned, stressing that even distant storms can pose a serious threat.

If you are outdoors and cannot get to a sturdy building, avoid open spaces, tall objects, and bodies of water. Do not stand outside waiting for transportation during active thunderstorms. Students are encouraged to stay indoors until the weather improves.

Officials are also highlighting the “30-30 Rule” for thunder and lightning safety:
If you can count 30 seconds or less between seeing a lightning flash and hearing thunder, seek shelter immediately.

Once indoors, remain sheltered for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before resuming outdoor activities.

This rule is based on the fact that lightning can strike even from storms that seem far away, often reaching several miles beyond the center of a storm.

Residents are also advised to stay away from electrical appliances, avoid using wired devices, and keep off balconies or porches during lightning activity.

Authorities continue to monitor the weather situation closely, with a flash flood watch remaining in effect until later this afternoon.

For the latest updates, follow official advisories from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services and local emergency channels.
