The VC Bird International Airport joined the global observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this week with its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Symposium, bringing together employees and health advocates under the theme “Standing Strong, Standing Together Against Breast Cancer.”
The event, held on Wednesday, focused on educating staff about prevention, early detection, and the importance of community support in the fight against breast cancer.
Featured speaker Dr. Monica Osborne-Stevens delivered an informative presentation covering a range of topics including lifestyle habits, early detection methods, emotional wellness, and life after diagnosis. Her talk was described by participants as empowering and enlightening.

Also addressing the gathering was James Luke, the airport’s resident naturalist, who highlighted the vital connection between nutrition and health. He emphasized that “food is medicine,” and encouraged attendees to incorporate immune-boosting foods into their daily meals to strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
One of the most moving moments of the symposium came from Melinda Williams, a breast cancer survivor who shared her personal journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Her testimony of strength and perseverance resonated deeply with attendees, serving as a reminder that with early detection, proper care, and community support, survival is possible.
Author and motivational speaker Koren Norton, owner of KN Consulting, also participated in the event, inspiring the audience with her message of hope and empowerment.

The symposium is part of VC Bird International Airport’s ongoing commitment to employee wellness and public health education. Management has pledged to continue hosting the event annually to ensure that staff remain informed, supported, and united in the fight against breast cancer.
Through this initiative, the airport community continues to stand as one, raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and reinforcing the message that early detection saves lives.

Kudos to VC Bird International Airport for using their platform to raise awareness. It’s great when institutions beyond the health sector take up the fight and support those who’ve battled or are still battling cancer
Breast cancer affects so many families. Glad to see it being talked about openly and often.
