High Court Rejects Bail Request from Jailed Police Officer

A police officer jailed for firing his gun in public has been denied bail by the High Court.

Karim Warner is currently serving a year behind bars after being found guilty of the offense. His attorney, Andrew Okola, has appealed the conviction and sentence handed down by Senior Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel.

Warner sought his release on bail through the High Court, but Justice Stanley John turned down the request, explaining that bail applications in appeal cases must go through the Court of Appeal instead.

The 37-year-old was convicted over a December 2023 incident in Willikies involving a leased vehicle dispute that turned violent.

According to court testimony, Warner confronted two people in a Toyota Mark X—a car he owned but had rented out. When they wouldn’t hand over the vehicle, he used his Lexus to block them in and demanded they get out.

After one occupant suggested going to the police station, Warner rejected the idea, grabbed his gun, and opened fire on the car—damaging the trunk, rear door, and tire.

Warner insisted he only fired to protect his property and disputed claims about the number of shots. But the magistrate found 12 rounds excessive and convicted him.

His appeal will now be heard by the Court of Appeal.
