Across Antigua, a silent crisis is unfolding in plain sight. At bus stops meant for weary commuters, women battling mental illness now seek refuge — sleeping on benches, surrounded by plastic bags and bottles, exposed to the elements and the indifference of passersby.

Shermain Bique-Charles has that story.

  1. You have to wonder if these people have children or family, because to see your family in such a state should break your heart. This is not a government issue this is an all of us issue because we all are impacted

  2. I’ve seen this same Individual around the Villa area before, she is usually very quiet and I rarely ever saw her move.

I pray she gets the help she needs, or atleast permanent housing

    • It is not easy for family members to deal with a person with mental illness.

  3. Thank you Antigua.news for looking into a very touching and serious matter we face today. The government and the opposition are busy fighting against each other on other matters while there are bigger wounds to clean. These women are at a high danger risk with no one to protect them. We pass daily and see how even the community fails these women. We don’t hear their stories but this stems from family drama or ungrateful children to many other things. We need to see the authorities acting on real matters now

  4. The story broke my heart. I see that lady everyday and always wonder what coulda cuz this. She was the same lady that they fought to remove from prison i believe. She has children but she nah listen. We pass by these women every day, and somehow they’ve become part of the scenery, when they should be the centre of urgent compassion and action.

What’s unfolding isn’t just homelessness it’s a breakdown of our collective responsibility. These women are someone’s daughters, sisters, mothers. They are human beings trapped in cycles of neglect, untreated illness, and societal shame.

The state, the community, and families all have roles to play not in shuffling them away, but in restoring their dignity, providing psychiatric care, and creating safe spaces where healing can actually begin.

It’s time Antigua stops looking away.

  5. People dont even want to go on the bus stop. The place smell bad..urine. it’s very upsetting. And no body seem to care..where is the care? The bustop was built for people to wait on busses and shelter while they do that. And our society allowed a woman to take over the place and even preaching violence to those who come to use the busstop.
