The spirit of independence came alive at Grace Christian Academy on Wednesday as students, parents, teachers and parents transformed the school grounds into a vibrant showcase of Antiguan culture, food, and creativity.
Dressed proudly in their Independence wear, students beamed with national pride as they welcomed visitors to what many parents described as a “stellar and heartwarming Independence Fair.”
From the moment guests entered, the air was filled with the irresistible aroma of local favourites — steaming ducana, saltfish, chop-up, seasoned rice, souse, and freshly baked bread — all complemented by cool local juices. Nearby, popcorn machines crackled, snow cones glistened in the sun, and tamarind stew offered a sweet touch of nostalgia.

But the day wasn’t just about food. The students took visitors on a journey through Antigua and Barbuda’s rich heritage, setting up cultural exhibitions that featured traditional household tools, including vintage sewing machines and classic cookware from “back in the day.”

Adding to the charm, some displays paid tribute to national symbols and wildlife, including the island’s beloved frigate bird, and other elements that define the nation’s cultural identity.

Teachers and parents applauded the students’ effort and creativity, describing the fair as both educational and inspiring.
“It was beautiful to see our children so enthusiastic about our culture,” one parent said. “They didn’t just read about heritage, they lived it today.”

The fair ended on a high note, with laughter, music, and a shared sense of pride reminding everyone that independence is more than a holiday, it’s a celebration of who Antiguans and Barbudans are, and the traditions that continue to bind them together.
