A woman has accepted responsibility for using forged checks to fraudulently obtain over $2,000 from a wholesale establishment, entering guilty pleas to three criminal charges in court.
Jahmalier Grant confessed to illegally securing funds totaling $2,300—in amounts of $900, $500, and $900—through the use of counterfeit checks at a wholesale business during three separate transactions in September 2022.
While Grant acknowledged guilt on three counts of obtaining money through forged instruments, she denied wrongdoing on six other related charges involving forgery and uttering forged documents. Prosecutors agreed to proceed based on her partial admission.
According to court testimony, the checks in question were taken during a residential burglary at the victim’s residence, where an entire checkbook was stolen. Grant’s account of events shifted during the investigation- she first maintained that an unidentified young man had given her the checks to deposit, but eventually confessed to creating the forgeries herself.
The three charges stem from checks allegedly bearing the forged signature of a single individual. Two of the fraudulent transactions took place on Lower Market Street on September 7, 2022, with the third occurring two days later on September 9.
The court will hand down Grant’s sentence on November 18.
