Mr. Décio de Carvalho, Director of MV Logos Hope, presents a commemorative plaque to His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Governor-General, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, and Lady Williams officially welcomed the MV Logos Hope back to the twin-island state during a launch ceremony held onboard the vessel in St. John’s Harbour on Wednesday.
The event marked the Logos Hope’s first return to Antigua and Barbuda in eight years—its previous visit having taken place in 2017. Operated by GBA Ships e.V., the Logos Hope is celebrated worldwide as the largest floating book fair, bringing affordable literature and cultural exchange to more than 70 countries and 140 ports.
Joining Their Excellencies at the ceremony was Sir Lionel Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister. Together, they joined ship directors, crew members, and local officials in marking the start of the vessel’s new visit under the theme “Sharing Knowledge, Help, and Hope.”
In his address, Sir Rodney extended greetings on behalf of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, commending the vessel’s crew for their dedication to education and humanitarian service. He underscored the significance of the Logos Hope’s visit for local schools, civic groups, and young people, noting that the experience provides “a global classroom that inspires curiosity, learning, and cultural understanding.”
“The Logos Hope represents the best of international cooperation — people of different nations working together to spread education and goodwill. Antigua and Barbuda proudly welcomes such a mission,” His Excellency said.
During the ceremony, Sir Rodney was presented with a commemorative plaque by the ship’s director, Mr. Décio de Carvalho. He and Lady Williams later toured the extensive onboard book fair, accompanied by Sir Lionel Hurst and senior crew members.
The colourful launch included a “Parade of Nations” showcasing the ship’s multicultural volunteer crew, welcoming remarks by ship leaders and local representatives, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the official opening of the book fair to the public.
The Logos Hope will remain in port for several days, offering thousands of books at affordable prices and hosting community outreach programmes, workshops, and cultural performances — all aimed at promoting literacy, friendship, and mutual understanding among nations.
