Residents of Antigua and Barbuda are being advised to take precautions as air quality is expected to reach moderate levels over the weekend, according to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services. The change in air quality is linked to the 26th notable surge of Saharan dust this year, which has carried fine particulate matter across the region.
Meteorologists say the Air Quality Index (AQI) will range between 50 and 70 from tonight through Monday. While the air is generally considered safe for the general population, individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, children, the elderly, and asthmatics may experience discomfort if exposed to outdoor air for extended periods.
Authorities are advising sensitive groups to limit prolonged outdoor exertion and to monitor symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. The public is encouraged to follow updates from the Meteorological Service through antiguamet.com, social media platforms, and local radio and television stations.
The Meteorological Services emphasized that while the health risk remains low for most people, the presence of Saharan dust can cause temporary irritation and should be taken seriously by vulnerable populations.
Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions until air quality improves in the coming days.
