Parents and teachers across Antigua and Barbuda are being urged to exercise extra caution as cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) have been reported in several schools on the island.
At least one primary school confirm that multiple children are already infected, prompting reminders about prevention, hygiene, and early treatment.
HFMD is a contagious viral illness most common among infants and young children, though older students and adults can also contract it.
It is caused by a group of enteroviruses, most often the Coxsackievirus, and spreads easily through close contact — including coughing, sneezing, sharing utensils, and touching contaminated surfaces.
Typical symptoms include fever, sore throat, painful mouth sores, and a rash featuring small red spots or blisters on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks. While uncomfortable, the illness is usually mild and resolves within 7 to 10 days.
Doctors recommend keeping infected children at home to prevent further spread and ensuring they remain well-hydrated.
Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort, and medical attention should be sought if symptoms worsen or dehydration occurs.
Parents are reminded to teach children proper hygiene — such as frequent handwashing and avoiding the sharing of food and personal items — to reduce the risk of infection.

This has been going around my daughter’s preschool for a week now. Hoping the schools take it seriously and sanitize properly.
Some of these schools have poor hygiene standards. This should be a wake-up call for better sanitation all year round.
Seems like it’s that time of year for them things
Take heed parents. My daughter got it a few times. It is very contagious. It spreads.
I really hope the Ministry gives clear guidance. Some schools don’t even notify parents until it’s too late
It might sound simple, but washing hands properly can make a big difference.
Parents, please keep an eye out, this thing spreads fast. Hygiene is key right now.
Some parents just don’t listen. If your child is sick, keep them home! That’s how the rest of the class ends up infected
Every year it seems something new going around. Hope the Ministry of Health steps in quickly
