Kahleel Simon
Authorities are still piecing together what led to the fatal shooting of a teenager on his birthday nearly three months ago.
Acting Police Commissioner Everton Jeffers told state media that investigators are actively gathering evidence and witness accounts related to the death of Kahleel Simon, who died in a police encounter on August 27—the day he turned 18.
Speaking to ABS News, Jeffers explained the procedural steps: “What is happening as we speak is that further investigations are being done, a number of statements have been taken and a file is being put together. When that file is complete it will go before the Magistrate and the coroner’s inquest will be called and at the end of the day a decision will come out of that coroner’s inquest.”
Jeffers also confirmed to state media that medical examiners have finished conducting an autopsy on Simon’s body.
The shooting has become a flashpoint in the community, with Simon’s family members and local residents staging repeated demonstrations. They contend the officer used disproportionate force and that Simon’s death was unjustified, asserting he was never given an opportunity to peacefully comply before being shot.

Why do coroner’s inquest take so damn long to happen. The families deserve speedier action
Prayers for Kahleel’s loved ones as they face yet another difficult step. Smh
The demonstrations aren’t just about Kahleel. They’re about a community tired of feeling powerless
Comment *The community is hurting, and all we get are technical explanations. We need accountability, not bureaucracy.
This inquest can’t be rushed or superficial. Kahleel Simon’s death must be fully examined.
We keep hearing about statements and files, but what about justice? What about clarity? What about the truth?
