21-year-old Antiguan scholar Resa B. Nelson
The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has extended its warmest congratulations to 21-year-old Antiguan scholar Resa B. Nelson, who has been named the 2026 Caribbean Rhodes Scholar, one of the region’s most prestigious academic honours.
The announcement was made during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, where Prime Minister Gaston Browne commended Nelson for emerging as the top candidate among nine distinguished finalists from across the Commonwealth Caribbean.
“Ms. Nelson’s achievement, emerging as the top candidate among nine finalists from across the Commonwealth Caribbean for one of the world’s most prestigious academic honours is a source of immense pride not only for her family and community, but for our entire nation,” the Prime Minister said.
Nelson, a Biology major at Hofstra University and a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Scholarship, has already distinguished herself through advanced scientific research. Her work includes innovative studies on converting sargassum seaweed into bio-products, a topic of growing relevance across the Caribbean as well as contributions to other high-level research initiatives. She has also been active in community outreach, mentoring students and participating in educational programmes.
Cabinet members praised her selection as a Rhodes Scholar as a powerful reminder of what young Antiguans and Barbudans can achieve on the global stage. “Her selection as a Rhodes Scholar reaffirms our belief in the potential of our young people: with hard work, vision, and a commitment to service, they can excel on the world stage,” Prime Minister Browne added.
The Cabinet also expressed gratitude to the educators, mentors, family members, and community supporters who have guided Nelson along her academic path.
Nelson is expected to begin a Master’s by Research in Biology at the University of Oxford, joining an elite cohort of scholars committed to tackling some of humanity’s most urgent scientific and social challenges.
In honouring this milestone, the Government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding educational opportunities and supporting the next generation of scholars.
“Once again, congratulations to Ms. Nelson. May your journey to Oxford and beyond continue to embody the very best of our nation’s talent, ambition, and spirit,” the Cabinet stated.

Congratulations
Congratulations! Does this means she is the only Rhodes Scholar from the Caribbean for 2026?
So proud of Resa B. Nelson! A shining example for young students across the Caribbean.
The Caribbean is lucky to have such bright minds emerging from our islands. Well done
