A Crosbies resident admitted to stealing groceries and automotive products from a Bendals Road supermarket has been hit with fines and a compensation order following his court appearance
Toby Bowen stood before the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court last week where he pleaded guilty to one count of larceny. Magistrates handed him a $300 fine with a one-month deadline for payment, failing which he’ll serve 15 days behind bars.
The court also ordered Bowen to compensate the First Best Supermarket owner within seven days or spend a week in prison.
The charges stem from a November 8th incident captured on surveillance cameras showing two men walking out of the supermarket with a bottle of engine oil, cooking oil, and a pack of Huggies diapers without paying.
Police arrested Bowen days later in the Gray’s Farm area and brought him into custody.

And there i thought if you lived in one of these boojee communities like Crosbie you have arrived… Hmmmm I was certainly mislead. Things hard with everybody
Camera never lie! These fellas forget everywhere have CCTV now.
Obviously his address saved him from the penalty he deserves! Who says that Justice is blind?
$300 fine and compensation is fair. Hope he pays it and learn
The headline paints a small but telling snapshot of life on the island. A man fined for taking engine oil, cooking oil and diapers isn’t the stuff of master criminals, it’s the everyday edge where personal struggle, inflation and the law intersect. I can’t confirm why he took them, so I won’t guess. What’s certain is that these are basic, utilitarian items, and cases like this often highlight how thin the margin can be for some households.
Good to see the matter handled quickly. Actions have consequences, and the compensation order is fair the supermarket deserves to recover its losses
While wrongdoing can’t be excused, it raises bigger questions about cost of living pressures and the kinds of support available for people who may not be coping.
