The United Progressive Party (UPP) took to the streets on Sunday with an islandwide motorcade, making stops in several communities as the party continued its demand for a full inquiry into the alleged illegal sale of nearly 100 government-owned vehicles.

The motorcade, which traveled through multiple constituencies, focused on one issue: the unresolved questions surrounding the Ministry of Works controversy, commonly referred to as the “Vehicle-Gate” scandal.

Police officers were stationed along the route to ensure the event proceeded smoothly. Law enforcement reported no major disturbances, and the motorcade was allowed to move through its scheduled path without incident.

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle used the opportunity to reiterate the party’s position that only an independent and transparent investigation can restore public confidence.

“Nothing short of a fully independent inquiry will satisfy the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” Pringle said. “We need answers about how government vehicles were acquired, how they were disposed of, and who benefited. The public deserves clarity, and accountability must follow where necessary.”

While UPP officials accuse the government of mishandling public assets and bypassing proper systems, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said that restitution is the way forward in this instance.

Measures, he said, have also been put in place to ensure that this situation is not repeated.

Sunday’s motorcade is the latest in a series of public actions by the UPP aimed at keeping pressure on the administration to release complete information on the matter.

Party members say they intend to continue their advocacy until a formal, independent mechanism is established to investigate the issue.

Of course they will. Reality check: This is 2025. Elections are constitutionally due in 2028. They have years to let off steam, this bunch of idle, desperate, gay desperados.

    • If there’s nothing to hide, an independent probe should be welcomed. It settles the debate once and for all.

    • Your handle “Faithful National” is certainly a misnomer.

If you were truly a faithful national, you would recognize the clear need for an independent investigation into this matter.

How can the husband of a sitting minister, who is directly connected to this issue, expect the public to believe he is unbiased in his so-called investigation? And how can that same minister—who serves as our country’s Finance Minister and has direct oversight of the nation’s purse strings—be the one to lead or influence an inquiry into the management of her own ministry?

The fact that some individuals continue to dismiss calls for an investigation as mere political maneuvering by the Opposition is simply mind-boggling.

We, the tax-paying public of Antigua, are entitled to answers. If you truly are a “Faithful National,” you would join the call for transparency. And if you cannot see the need for this, then for the love of all that is good for our blessed country, please cease and desist from using that moniker in future communications.
