Governor General Sir Rodney Williams has praised the Antigua and Barbuda Renal Society for its steadfast commitment to improving national health outcomes, especially in the fight against kidney disease. His commendation came during a luncheon hosted by the Society on Sunday, where he and Lady Williams were special guests.
Sir Rodney expressed deep appreciation for the organisation’s work and noted his and Lady Williams’ pride in serving as its Patrons. He also paid tribute to the former Patrons, Sir James and Lady Carlisle, highlighting Lady Carlisle’s continued volunteerism despite stepping away from public life.
The Governor General underscored the urgency of addressing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) across the Caribbean, describing them as a major public health challenge. He stated that NCDs account for approximately 75 percent of all deaths in the region and consume as much as 8 percent of GDP in several Caribbean nations.
Against this backdrop, he stressed the indispensable role of the Renal Society, commending its work in raising awareness, promoting prevention, encouraging early intervention, and supporting healthier lifestyles among citizens.
Sir Rodney also extended gratitude to the medical teams at the Renal Unit of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, acknowledging doctors, nurses, technicians, orderlies, and volunteers for the critical care they provide. He noted that recent donations, including an angiography table and lead jackets, would significantly strengthen renal care services and improve patient outcomes.
The Governor General urged the Society to stay focused on its mission, especially as the country continues to record rising cases of kidney disease and increasing demand for dialysis and transplant support. He encouraged volunteers, partners, and stakeholders to recommit to the cause, which he described as “a noble task of caring for the vulnerable.”
Sir Rodney also recognised the ongoing support from organisations such as the Halo Foundation, which recently made a financial contribution to assist the Renal Society’s work.
He closed by expressing optimism that the collective efforts of the Society, health professionals, partners, and the wider community will continue to produce tangible improvements in renal health across Antigua and Barbuda.
