Director General Merchant speaks on changes to National Solid Waste

As the national clean-up campaign continues, the National Solid Waste will see some rezoning taking place to assist in bulk waste collection.

The decision came from Cabinet.

It is proving to be not really a challenge but hard work for the Solid Waste Management Authority since it was decided that there will be a national cleanup campaign and so it is believed that tweaking of the zones will facilitate the removal of bulk waste.”

It’s amazing that it was reported that this week you will go into one particular area and remove piles and piles of bulk waste, and you return next week and there are piles and piles of bulk waste again and so that’s a challenge and they are working at rezoning,” Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant explained.

Plans are also in the works to increase the number of clean up crews who work on the streets and the sides of the roads.

“The minister brought a proposal for the upgrading or upscaling of those gangs to increase  their numbers and also to increase the persons who are in the services of the Solid Waste Management Authority to remove the bulk waste,” Merchant added.

  1. About time Let’s hope this restructuring actually fixes the issues and isn’t just a reshuffle. Residents just want their garbage collected on time.
