Genevieve ‘Teacher Gen’ Smith
The Potters community is grieving the loss of one of its most cherished pillars, Genevieve “Teacher Gen” Smith, who passed away this week. A lifelong educator, caregiver, and spiritual guide, Teacher Gen leaves behind a legacy woven deeply into the lives of generations of Potter’s residents.
Teacher Gen served as a teacher at the Potters School and was also a devoted Sunday School instructor at the Potters Zion Moravian Church. Residents say her influence extended far beyond the classroom; she was a mother, sister, mentor, and friend to countless individuals.
“She taught many of us, whether in school or in Sunday School,” one resident shared in a message circulating in community groups. “She will be missed. May her soul rest in peace and rise again in glory.”
Community members remember Teacher Gen not only as an educator, but as a compassionate caregiver who fostered numerous children throughout her life. Her home was known as a safe refuge, a place of warmth, discipline, and unconditional support for young people who needed stability and love.
One community voice noted, “This lady fostered numerous children in the Potter’s community. I actually thought of her while listening to the presentation on abused children. She was a mother to many.”
Teacher Gen is also the grandmother of All Saints West MP and Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Anthony Smith Jr., who frequently speaks about the strong family values that shaped him. Her passing is felt not only within her family but across the broader communities she touched—Potters Village, the Moravian church family, and those she nurtured personally and spiritually.
Condolences continue to pour in for her family, the Potters Zion Moravian Church, and the entire Potters community. Residents describe her death as “another heavy blow,” following recent losses within the village.
Even in grief, the community is united in celebrating the life of a woman whose service, kindness, and faith uplifted countless lives.
“Teacher Gen will be missed,” a message read. “Her work lives on through all of us.”
