
His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, and Her Excellency Lady Williams have expressed profound sadness at the passing of Sir Gerald Owen Anderson Watt, KCN, KC, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and one of the nation’s most influential legal and political figures.
In a statement issued from Government House, Their Excellencies extended condolences to the Watt family and paid tribute to Sir Gerald’s decades of distinguished public service. Over the course of his career, Sir Gerald served the nation in several key roles, including Attorney General, Parliamentarian, Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, President of the Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association, and long-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Sir Gerald was widely respected as a formidable legal mind, known for his intellectual depth, strong convictions, and fearless approach to debate. His outspoken nature and rigorous understanding of the law made him a prominent voice in national discourse on governance, constitutional matters, and democratic principles.
Whether presiding over parliamentary proceedings, practicing in the courtroom, or contributing to public debate, Sir Gerald earned respect for his principled positions and unwavering commitment to what he believed was in the best interest of Antigua and Barbuda. His tenure as Speaker, which spanned more than a decade, was characterised by passion, firmness, and a deep respect for the authority and responsibilities of the office.
The Governor-General and Lady Williams noted that Sir Gerald’s legacy of public service, intellectual courage, and dedication to nation-building will endure, and that his presence and voice will be deeply missed across the country.
