Sir Steadroy Confirms High-Level Talks with U.S. After 2026 Travel Restriction Announcement

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has expressed serious concern following an announcement from the White House that new travel restrictions affecting Antiguan and Barbudan nationals will take effect on January 1, 2026.

Acting Prime Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin said the decision has raised alarm within the administration, particularly given the number of citizens who travel frequently to the United States for medical treatment, education, business, and leisure.
He noted that the announcement came as a surprise and has generated widespread unease among nationals at home and abroad.

According to Sir Steadroy, the government intends to engage the United States at the highest diplomatic levels in an effort to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

“We value our longstanding and positive relationship with the United States,” he said, adding that the government is committed to working closely with American officials to achieve a swift and mutually acceptable outcome. “This is a matter of urgency, and we are moving aggressively to address it.”

Sir Steadroy also addressed concerns surrounding Antigua and Barbuda’s Citizenship by Investment Programme (CIP), stressing that the country has consistently cooperated with U.S. authorities and implemented recommendations aimed at strengthening the programme’s security and integrity.

He explained that Antigua and Barbuda has always maintained a residency requirement under the CIP and recently reinforced it through parliamentary action, extending the requirement to a minimum of 30 days.

“We have acted positively on every recommendation made by the U.S. government to address their concerns,” he said. “Our intention is to continue working hand-in-hand with the Americans to close any potential gaps and ensure the programme meets the highest international standards.”

Since the announcement, public concern has grown, with many citizens questioning how the restrictions may affect their personal and professional plans.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne, in a statement issued Tuesday night, assured the public that he will take an active role in diplomatic efforts to resolve the matter, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of Antiguan and Barbudan nationals.
