The United Progressive Party (UPP) has expressed gratitude to the Government and People of Cuba for decades of contributions to Antigua and Barbuda, particularly in healthcare and education.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the UPP highlighted the role of Cuban medical professionals who have served in Antigua and Barbuda over the years, noting that hundreds of doctors and healthcare workers were deployed through Cuba’s international medical assistance programmes. The party credited these professionals with strengthening the local healthcare system and delivering essential services to citizens and residents.

The party also pointed to Cuba’s eye-care programme, which it said provided significant relief to hundreds of Antiguans and Barbudans and was a key initiative during the UPP administration led by former prime minister Baldwin Spencer.

In addition, the UPP acknowledged Cuba’s support in the education and training of Antiguan and Barbudan students across a wide range of disciplines. According to the party, many beneficiaries came from families unable to afford tertiary education, and Cuban scholarships contributed to improved economic prospects for graduates and their families.

The statement further noted what the party described as a longstanding relationship of mutual respect between Cuban officials and senior UPP members, including Spencer, both during and outside of the party’s time in government.

The UPP also expressed regret over the termination of the partnership between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba under the current administration. While not outlining specific policy decisions, the party said it remains appreciative of Cuba’s assistance and emphasized that it has not forgotten the support provided.

  2. The FACT of the matter is that WE ALL do. It’s not a UPP issue, despite what their idle spin doctors may spew. Their lack of real issues is so evident. What a pathetic bunch!
