His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, on Thursday conferred the Governor-General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service Awards during a formal Investiture Ceremony held at Government House.

The ceremony honoured four distinguished individuals whose decades of dedication have made lasting contributions to national development in the fields of culture, public health, architecture, sport, and business.

The recipients were:
•⁠ ⁠Eustace Harris, affectionately known as “Gaytooks”, who was recognised for more than 60 years of faithful service to culture through the steelpan, helping to elevate the instrument as a national treasure and a global symbol of Antiguan and Barbudan identity.
•⁠ ⁠Phylis Ephena Vanetta Matthew, honoured for distinguished service to public health and community development through professional nursing, faith-based leadership, and advocacy on behalf of vulnerable and marginalised groups.
•⁠ ⁠Colin John Jenkins, recognised for outstanding contributions to the built environment, including leadership in architecture, sustainability, climate resilience, and national development.
•⁠ ⁠Donald Zorol Barthley, honoured for pioneering service to sport and business development, particularly through leadership in West Indies cricket, sports administration, entrepreneurship, and youth mentorship.

In his remarks, Sir Rodney explained that the Faithful and Meritorious Service Awards were established by Warrant in 2015 to complement the National Honours system. He noted that the awards were created to ensure that individuals whose service may not fall within a single honours framework are nonetheless recognised for their commitment, consistency, and contribution to nation-building.

The Governor-General also highlighted that nominations for the awards are submitted by application, emphasising that many acts of exceptional service occur quietly and may go unnoticed unless brought forward by individuals, organisations, and communities. He encouraged institutions to continue recognising excellence within their own ranks as part of fostering a national culture of appreciation and service.

The Faithful and Meritorious Service Awards are conferred in four grades: the Faithful and Meritorious Service Cross, and the Faithful and Meritorious Service Medal in Gold, Silver, and Bronze, reflecting varying levels of distinction and impact.

Sir Rodney expressed gratitude to the families, colleagues, and communities who supported the awardees throughout their journeys, noting that their encouragement and sacrifice were integral to the recipients’ achievements.

As the ceremony concluded, His Excellency and Her Excellency Lady Williams extended warm holiday greetings and best wishes for a peaceful, prosperous, and productive 2026, marked by unity, service, and national progress.
