A violent assault that shocked Antigua and Barbuda and the international community has now turned tragic.
American businesswoman Karen Johansson, who was severely beaten recently while conducting horseback riding tours on Runaway Beach, has died from her injuries.
Her sister confirmed that Karen suffered a catastrophic traumatic brain injury and was placed on life support with no chance of recovery. Medical personnel advised relatives that she could not breathe on her own and would never regain neurological function.
“Karen has an irreparable major brain injury with no chance of recovery… She was a registered organ donor… The procedure will probably happen on Saturday. Thanks for all of your support in this tough situation,” she said.
Despite the horrific circumstances, Karen’s loved ones say she will continue helping others even in death. As a registered organ donor, her organs and tissue will support lifesaving transplant procedures and medical research, potentially transforming or saving many lives around the world.
Meanwhile, her former partner is reportedly being questioned by police, and reports are that he could be charged soon.
Reliable sources indicate that the man she had recently ended a relationship with is alleged to have carried out the violent assault, leaving her with a massive head injury, multiple broken bones, and a fractured jaw.

WOW. You mean that lady really died? That was some vicious act.
I hope they find that idiot…
This woman didn’t have to die this way. Not good for our tourism sector.
A savage beast he is. I hope he gets life in prison
What life in prison you talking about, needs to start hanging convicted murderers
What kind of partner would brutally kill a woman like that?
A WICKEN SON OF A BITCH
She was a beautiful person inside and out; so generous funny, and loving, and she was in love with Antigua. I am broken hearted by this news. She was my wonderful, cherished friend and I will miss her forever.
I’m so very sorry for your loss.
He should be taken to the stadium and publicly stoned to death. He doesn’t deserve life imprisonment. He deserves to be beaten to death.
A beach is supposed to be one of the safest places. This is disturbing on so many levels
I am so sad to hear of this horrible act of violence. Karen had a big heart and loved the Antiguan people. She brought toys for the children native to the island and helped develop the horse riding business of her friend. She deserves justice, please work hard to solve this horrific act.
