McLean Emmanuel better known as King Short Shirt
Minister of Education, Sports and the Creative Industries, Daryll S. Matthew, has extended his prayers, well wishes, and unwavering support to Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural giant, Sir McLean Emmanuel, better known as King Short Shirt, who remains hospitalized.
The Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission has joined the Minister in rallying the nation to lift up the beloved calypso icon in prayer and gratitude, recognizing his immeasurable contributions to the country’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Reflecting on King Short Shirt’s most recent performance at the 2025 Independence Calypso Competition on October 30th, where he appeared as a special guest, Minister Matthew highlighted the power and passion that continue to define the 83-year-old performer’s presence on stage.

“Watching Sir McLean deliver ‘Our Pledge’ with such conviction and patriotism was a reminder of his enduring greatness,” Minister Matthew noted. “His voice stood firm and commanding, carrying the weight of our national story with grace and emotional precision. It was not simply a performance—it was a gift to the nation.”
He further described King Short Shirt as a “living monument of cultural history,” whose music has chronicled the nation’s triumphs and challenges while shaping the consciousness of generations.
“Sir McLean has taught us, inspired us, and held us accountable—all through song,” the Minister added. “Our country owes him a debt of gratitude that words can scarcely express.”
Minister Matthew concluded with a heartfelt prayer for Sir McLean’s healing and restoration, calling on the public to keep him and his family in their thoughts.
“May God’s grace and mercy surround you, Sir McLean. May His healing hands restore your strength, peace, and comfort. We stand with you, and we believe in your full recovery.”
As the nation awaits continued updates, Antigua and Barbuda remains united in support of the man whose music has become the soundtrack of its spirit.
