New Year’s Day Message ABEC’s Chairman His Excellency by Ambassador Arthur G.B Thomas

Arthur G.B Thomas

As we welcome the year 2026, I extend warm greetings and sincere best wishes to the people of Antigua and Barbuda on behalf of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC). The commencement of a new year affords us an important opportunity for reflection, renewal, and a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to the democratic principles that underpin our constitutional order.

During the past year, the Commission has continued its work to strengthen, safeguard, and progressively modernize the electoral system of Antigua and Barbuda. These efforts have been guided by our enduring commitment to transparency, professionalism, and institutional integrity—values that are indispensable to the maintenance of public confidence in the electoral process and, by extension, in our democracy itself.

Looking ahead, the Commission recognizes that democratic consolidation is not a static achievement, but a continuing process. In this regard, ABEC is committed to fostering broader public consultation and deeper engagement with all political actors and stakeholders. Such engagement is essential as we explore opportunities for innovation and modernization within the electoral system and processes, including thoughtful consideration of reforms designed to ensure that the Representation of the People Act continues to keep pace with evolving democratic practices, technological advances, and the legitimate expectations of our citizens.

I wish, at this juncture, to express the Commission’s profound appreciation to all stakeholders who have worked collaboratively with us over the past year. In particular, we acknowledge Canadian Bank Note, our principal technology partner, whose expertise and support have been instrumental in advancing key aspects of our electoral infrastructure. The Commission also extends its gratitude to its dedicated staff, civil society partners, and political representatives whose cooperation remains vital to the effective administration of elections.

This new year also invites reflection on those whose contributions to our democratic life have left an enduring legacy. The Commission pays special homage to the late Sir Gerald Watt, whose unwavering commitment to democratic consolidation, constitutionalism, and public service stands as an enduring example. His loss is deeply felt, and his contribution to the strengthening of our democratic institutions cannot be diminished.

As we move forward, I encourage all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to do so, and I urge registered voters to ensure that their voter identification cards are current. Active participation, informed citizenship, and civic education remain central to the health and vitality of our democracy, and the Commission will continue to place emphasis on these foundational elements.

As Chairman, I reaffirm ABEC’s commitment to working with the people of Antigua and Barbuda in a spirit of openness, consultation, and shared responsibility. Together, we can continue to strengthen our democratic institutions and ensure that they remain responsive, credible, and worthy of public trust.

I wish you and your families a peaceful, prosperous, and fulfilling New Year.
