Minister Melford Nicholas and multi-disciplinary delegation at IRENA in Abu Dhabi
Antigua and Barbuda is strengthening its push toward a resilient, affordable energy future as Melford Nicholas, Minister responsible for Energy, leads the country’s delegation at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Sixteenth Assembly and related high-level meetings underway in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Assembly, taking place from January 10–12, brings together global leaders, policymakers, and development partners to chart pathways for accelerating the global energy transition, with a strong focus on the unique challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Minister Nicholas is joined by a multi-disciplinary delegation that includes H.E. Ruleta Camacho-Thomas, Climate Change Ambassador; H.E. Theon Ali, Ambassador; H.E. Brian Challenger, Advisor to the Minister; and Ms. Karen Burton, Director of Operations and Energy at the Ministry of ICTs, Utilities and Energy.
As a member of the IRENA Assembly Bureau, Minister Nicholas held discussions with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, focusing on Antigua and Barbuda’s national priorities and practical strategies to speed up implementation across SIDS. Talks emphasized mobilizing investment, strengthening delivery partnerships, and translating commitments into finance-ready projects that can be implemented at scale.
On January 10, the minister is also participating in several high-level engagements, including the Global Coalition for Energy Planning (GCEP) roundtable and a SIDS ministerial dialogue. These sessions are centered on investment pathways, regional collaboration, and innovative partnerships designed to overcome financing and capacity constraints facing island economies.
Minister Nicholas is scheduled to chair a ministerial-level session on January 11, further underscoring Antigua and Barbuda’s leadership role within IRENA and its commitment to building robust project pipelines that deliver resilient, affordable, and sustainable renewable energy outcomes for its people and the wider Caribbean.

Hope this translates into more solar panels, wind turbines, and affordable clean energy at home for everyone.
Go Melford! Keep pushing for sustainable energy, our kids will thank you one day
