Cabinet has approved full sponsorship for national sprinter Joella Lloyd, providing a significant boost to her preparations for major international track and field competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States.

The decision was taken during a recent Cabinet meeting, according to Director of Communication in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant.

Merchant explained that Cabinet agreed to place Lloyd in a special government assistance programme that will provide full financial support for her athletic training as she transitions into the next phase of her career.

“Cabinet agreed that it would provide full sponsorship to Joella Lloyd, offering financial assistance towards her training,” Merchant said. “As you know, the government had assisted her while she was attending the University of Tennessee.

She has now graduated from that university and is focusing fully on her athletic development.”

With her collegiate career now complete, Lloyd will concentrate exclusively on elite-level training and competition.

Merchant noted that the new support arrangement is designed to ensure she receives the resources and preparation necessary to compete consistently at international meets.

The government’s investment aims to position Lloyd for success on the global athletics stage, with a particular focus on qualification and performance at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Joella Lloyd is regarded as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s top sprinting prospects, and the latest Cabinet decision reflects a continued commitment to supporting high-performance athletes representing the nation internationally.
