Minister of Agriculture Anthony Smith Jr inspects seedlings
The Ministry of Agriculture has officially launched the distribution of 20,000 seedlings to farmers and home growers participating in the Plant 2 Plate Backyard Garden Competition, marking another step toward strengthening local food production and household food security.
The initiative encourages backyard and small-scale farming, with participants competing for prizes of up to $7,500, awarded to the top gardener.

The seedlings being distributed include a wide variety of crops such as beet, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, lettuce, thyme, chive, celery, kale, arugula, eggplant, and Chinese cabbage.
Officials say the programme supports the national push for greater self-sufficiency in food production, promoting the message: “Home grown today, food secure tomorrow.”

The Ministry is encouraging residents to take part and join the effort to cultivate a more sustainable and resilient agricultural future.

This actually made me smile. Food security is no joke, and this feels like a step in the right direction.
Wish I had known this good time was happening
This programme shows how small-scale farming can make a big impact on national food security. Even a few backyard plants reduce reliance on imports and teach valuable skills.
Great initiative, but I hope they include follow-up support, like pest control advice and watering tips.
