Centenarian Elfrida Payne-Abbott
Antigua and Barbuda has welcomed another centenarian, as Elfrida Payne-Abbott, affectionately known as Ms. Tiny, marked her 100th birthday on January 27. The milestone was celebrated during a special gathering at the Lebanon Moravian Church, attended by family members, friends and well-wishers from the wider community.
Born in Seaview Farm in 1926, Ms. Tiny has lived through a century of social and economic change, guided by a life rooted in faith, hard work and resilience. Her birthday celebration was made even more memorable with a visit from Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, who conveyed congratulations on behalf of the nation and presented her with a commemorative gift basket.
Ms. Tiny’s life story reflects remarkable strength and determination. After losing her husband in her thirties, she raised four children on her own, relying on discipline, perseverance and an unwavering trust in God. Throughout her working years, she took on multiple roles, including farmer, domestic worker, baker and entrepreneur, to support her family and build a stable life.
Speakers at the celebration praised her for her strong values, quiet leadership and commitment to family, noting that her life has been an inspiration to younger generations. Many described her as a pillar of strength within her community, whose example continues to guide those who follow.
As she celebrated reaching the century mark, Ms. Tiny offered simple yet powerful advice to young people: work hard, trust God, and remain connected to family. At 100 years old, her life stands as a testament to resilience, faith and the enduring power of determination.
