The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has issued a strong warning to motorists following a dangerous incident at an active work site along Bishopgate Street, where ongoing mainline replacement works are currently underway.

In a notice issued on Monday, January 26, APUA confirmed that the project has progressed to the stage where customer reconnections have begun. However, the utility expressed concern over unsafe behavior by at least one motorist who, on Saturday, January 24, reportedly removed traffic cones and drove through the restricted work zone, running over materials laid out as part of the project.

APUA stressed that such actions pose serious safety risks to both the public and its field teams, disrupt construction progress, and could lead to further delays in completing the works. The authority emphasized that traffic control measures, barriers, and signage are in place for a reason, to protect lives and safeguard critical infrastructure.

The utility is urging all road users, particularly motorists, to strictly observe work zone signage and comply with traffic control instructions. Motorists are also being asked to exercise patience and avoid entering restricted areas while work is ongoing.

APUA thanked residents and road users for their continued cooperation and understanding, noting that public compliance is essential to ensuring the timely completion of these necessary infrastructure upgrades. Customers seeking further information or assistance are encouraged to contact the APUA Support Centre at 211.
