Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin is spearheading efforts to establish a law school at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus, with plans for the programme to become operational in time for the 2027–2028 academic year.

The initiative is being positioned as a critical development not only for Antigua and Barbuda, but for students across the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), who currently face significant barriers to accessing legal education.

According to Sir Steadroy, discussions are at an advanced stage for the Five Islands Campus to begin offering the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree locally, with academic support and collaboration from the University of the West Indies Mona Campus.

He explained that the move is aimed at expanding access to legal education for Antiguans, Barbudans, and other OECS nationals, while ensuring that academic standards remain on par with established UWI law programmes.

The addition of a law school forms part of the broader expansion of academic offerings at the Five Islands Campus, which is being developed as a regional university hub designed to serve the wider OECS.
