The high-profile murder case against Angela Mejia, the woman accused of killing nine-year-old Chantel Crump, faced a dramatic moment in court this morning when her attorney formally requested that the matter be thrown out.
Attorney Wendel Alexander confirmed to Antigua.news that he applied for the case to be dismissed for want of prosecution, citing repeated delays and the unavailability of critical documents necessary to advance the committal proceedings.

“There were six previous adjournments and the case file was not available. These files are necessary for the committal proceedings,” Alexander said following the hearing.
The matter came before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, who declined to dismiss the case but granted what she described as one final, short adjournment. The court was told that the file is currently with the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The case has now been adjourned until March 18. Mejia remains on remand at His Majesty’s Prison.
Alexander stressed the urgency of bringing the matter to trial, noting the intense public interest and scrutiny surrounding the case. He argued that the prolonged delays have caused significant prejudice to his client, who has been in custody since her initial court appearance.
Mejia was charged following the grim discovery of Chantel Crump’s naked body in the Weatherills area on March 15, 2025. The nine-year-old had reportedly been taken by a woman in a vehicle near her home days earlier, triggering a wave of panic and a frantic search across communities.
From the moment Chantel was reported missing, residents mobilized in droves, sharing her photo, combing neighborhoods, and demanding answers. The discovery of her body intensified national grief and outrage, with candlelight vigils, church services, and emotional appeals from citizens calling for justice.
Yet nearly a year later, key questions remain unanswered.
One of the most troubling concerns for many members of the public is that the full details of the autopsy have not been publicly disclosed. The cause and manner of death have not been comprehensively ventilated in open court, leaving speculation and rumor to fill the void.
Many citizens have expressed anger over what they perceive as slow progress in the judicial process, while others have voiced concern about ensuring that due process is carefully observed in such a serious matter.
Legal observers note that committal proceedings in indictable matters such as murder rely heavily on properly compiled case files, including witness statements, forensic reports, and post-mortem findings. Without these documents, the process cannot lawfully advance to the High Court.
As the March 18 date approaches, the spotlight will remain firmly fixed on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine whether the matter will finally move forward.
For now, Angela Mejia remains behind bars, and a grieving nation continues to wait — for clarity, for answers, and ultimately, for justice for young Chantel Crump.

Wendel you not serious
This man yah haffi man better r yu just get rid a she quietly and call it George cause he a chat BS FR 😡😡
9YEAR OLD NAH MAN MADNESS
I would never forgive Antigua for this! I would never forgive the government, I would never forgive the system, I would never forgive the people and most importantly I would never forgive Wendel Alexander. I mean I know he’s doing his job and he’s earning his money but come on now. Throw out the case? Let’s not be ridiculous.
Totally agree
So no justice for the young child? Hold on. Pause Antigua.news!!! Wendel is what? I can’t even fathom this, this woman shouldn’t even be alive for right now… she cannot walk free
Please please please…. Don’t get me mad
I’m about to tear up this news media!! Listen nah rass me up right now Antigua news.. wah really do dah man ya name wendel? He drunk? Kill her but we getting justice for Chantel! Tell me when the riot start outside the court house and Wendel office
Im so upset I can’t see straight
This has got to be a joke. Dismiss the case man. Dismiss the case and post a missing person flyer because she won’t walk free. Antiguans may take and take and take but we will not take this.
So what i get from this story is that this little spanish girl could walk away then
@Rhea, that’s the problem with Antiguans, always waiting on someone else to start something. If you think a riot is the way to go, why don’t you plan one and put the word out for others to join you?
Prosecution need to do their job 🙄 so Wendell can move forward with the case, how many time he should go to court and you all not ready to go, that case cannot be thrown out she MUST PAY AND STAY IN JAIL FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE GIRL BYE.
I am almost certain that the decision to request a dismissal was discussed with and agreed to by he accused. Wendell is simply following instructions and relaying to the court the request of his client. “If you can’t prove my guilt then set me free”. Any accused would make that request in the simplest of matter. We can’t blame Wendell if the system fails to prosecute.
See what happened to the brothers in Arthur James murder trial.. Justice is for God he don’t sleep
Wendell tell her plea guilty then we give her a deal, life with no possibility of parole, so she will be thrown out the courts and stop wasting ppl time.
Thata sad though if this girl can just walk away. I saw she laughing while they were taking her to court
Justice for that little gurl. What happened to the autopsy. How can this happen in such a small society.
