ABEC Chairman Arthur Thomas with new recruits
The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has moved to strengthen its internal operations with the hiring of eighteen new staff members, signalling what officials describe as a major step toward modernizing and reinforcing the country’s electoral system.
In a press release issued on February 18, 2026, the Commission confirmed that the additional employees have been deployed across key departments, including Voter Registration and Administrative Support.
The expansion is part of ABEC’s broader effort to improve operational efficiency, enhance service delivery, and ensure full preparedness for upcoming electoral activities.
Supervisor of Elections Ian S. Hughes described the recruitment drive as a necessary investment in the future of electoral administration.

“The strengthening of our human resources is a critical step in ensuring that the Commission continues to operate with transparency, efficiency, and professionalism,” Hughes stated. He emphasized that as the electoral landscape evolves, the Commission must build a resilient and capable team to carry out its mandate effectively.
Chairman Arthur Thomas also welcomed the new recruits, underscoring the importance of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism in their roles. He encouraged continuous development and reminded the staff of their responsibility to uphold the Commission’s vision and mission while maintaining respect for the public and the authority of the institution.
The Commission says the workforce expansion reflects its proactive approach to meeting growing administrative demands and safeguarding the integrity of elections in Antigua and Barbuda.
With this latest move, ABEC is positioning itself to better serve citizens and stakeholders, reinforcing its commitment to administering free, fair, and credible elections across the nation.
