Nigel Christian

Shocking testimony in the ongoing murder trial of Nigel Christian has sent tremors through the High Court, as a key prosecution witness alleged that one of the accused claimed a prominent businessman had issued a contract to have Christian killed.

The dramatic revelation surfaced during proceedings before Justice Rajiv Persad, when the witness testified that accused Salim Harrigan allegedly stated that businessman Raymond Yhap was behind a murder-for-hire arrangement targeting Christian.

According to the witness, Harrigan claimed the alleged contract was facilitated through an inmate at His Majesty’s Prison — an assertion that stunned the courtroom and added a new layer of intrigue to the already high-profile case.

In another startling claim, the witness further alleged that police were aware of a purported plot to kill Christian before he was fatally shot on July 10, 2020. However, under intense cross-examination, the witness conceded that he did not know whether law enforcement authorities ever placed Christian in protective custody or took steps to shield him from harm.

Christian was gunned down in 2020 in a case that has gripped the nation and sparked ongoing public debate.

Wayne Thomas, Salim Harrigan, and Lasean Bully are jointly charged with Christian’s murder. All three men have pleaded not guilty, and the trial continues.

Who is Raymond Yhap?
Raymond Yhap is a local businessman and owner of Bar Stox, a company engaged in the sale of beverages, spirits, and snacks.

In 2021, a criminal case against Yhap was dismissed by Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh after his attorney, Andrew O’Kola, successfully argued a no-case submission.

Yhap had been arrested and charged following police raids on his business establishments, during which officers reportedly seized cash, a firearm, and ammunition. Authorities alleged that he was in possession of more ammunition than legally permitted.

However, during the proceedings, the defence challenged the credibility of the prosecution’s case, pointing to inconsistencies in the testimony of police officers who handled the seized items. On that basis, the court upheld the no-case submission, resulting in the dismissal of the matter.

At the time, Yhap’s attorney stated that his client was relieved and pleased to finally move forward with his life.

The Nigel Christian murder trial continues before the High Court.
