Electoral Commission Issues Media Rules Ahead of St. Philip By-Election
The Electoral Commission of Antigua and Barbuda has released a set of media guidelines aimed at ensuring fairness and equal access for candidates contesting the upcoming by-election in the St. Philip constituency.
The by-election, scheduled for March 16, will be conducted under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, which governs the country’s electoral process.
In the guidelines, the Commission stated that no radio or television station operating in Antigua and Barbuda should prevent or restrict any political party or candidate nominated for the St. Philip By-Election 2026 from broadcasting information needed to promote their candidacy.
The rules also apply to print media outlets, which are required to allow political parties and candidates the opportunity to publish campaign material promoting their candidacy in the upcoming vote.
Media houses are further warned against altering or distorting any material submitted by candidates for broadcast or publication. According to the Commission, campaign messages must be presented as provided by the candidates to ensure accuracy and fairness.
Additionally, radio and television stations are prohibited from charging candidates higher-than-normal rates for political advertisements. The Commission noted that such actions could create barriers for candidates seeking to communicate with voters during the campaign period.
Under the regulations, any radio station, television station, print media outlet, or employee found in violation of the rules could face penalties upon summary conviction. Offenders may be fined up to $10,000 or face imprisonment for a period of up to one year.
The Electoral Commission says the guidelines are intended to promote transparency, fairness and equal opportunity for all candidates as voters prepare to head to the polls later this month.
